It starts with a number most of us can barely picture: many parents in Haiti earn around $120 a month. Not for one child’s tuition — for everything. Rent. Food. Transportation. Every need of every person in the household.
Now picture that same parent standing outside a school gate, watching the other children walk in with pressed uniforms and new books under their arms, knowing that this year, one or two of their own children will get to go — and the rest will wait.

The math parents are up against
More than 90 percent of schools in Haiti are private, which means education carries a price tag most families were never going to be able to pay on their own. A full year of school — tuition, a uniform, shoes, books and supplies — can run anywhere from roughly $150 to well over $500 per child, depending on the grade and the region. In the cities, where costs run higher, it can climb into the thousands.
Now hold that up against a monthly income of $120.
For a family with three or four school-age children, sending every one of them to school in the same year could cost more than the household earns in that entire year. So parents do what any parent would do when love outpaces resources: they choose. One child goes this year. Maybe another goes next year, if the harvest is good or work holds steady. Sometimes a child waits years — not for lack of ability or desire, but simply for lack of margin.
This isn’t a story about families who have given up. It’s a story about families making impossible choices with tremendous love, and doing everything they can within a system stacked against them.
